History

The School of Mathematics and Statistics, the predecessor of which was the Department of Mathematics and Physics founded in 1933, was launched in December 2005. Its Department of Statistics was set up in 1989. The two departments boast long histories.

Goals 

The college actively encourages teachers to carry out teaching reform and research, perfect their teaching and research environment, and organize and guide students to participate in science and technology innovation activities so as to improve their innovation consciousness, spirit, and ability. The teachers also inspire teamwork and develop practical application ability in the students through multiple channels.

Majors 

There are three undergraduate programs in mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computing sciences, and statistics.

The school is a national training institution for science talents, a provincial training base for postgraduate education, a ministry-university joint lab in its competitive discipline -- statistical modeling and data integration -- and a key lab for statistics and information technology, a specialty of Yunnan province.

It boasts a provincial-level professional teaching faculty for information and computing science, a brand course of Yunnan province, a provincial-level bilingual teaching demonstration course and a State-level bilingual teaching demonstration course.

The college is authorized to confer master's degrees in the primary disciplines of system sciences, quantitative economics, and applied statistics.

It also has primary disciplines in which it is entitled to confer a Doctorate and master's degree in mathematics and statistics and has two post-doctoral research stations in these two disciplines.

Probability & mathematical statistics and basic mathematics are two brand disciplines of Yunnan province.

Faculty

The school has a total of 63 employees (including 53 teaching faculty members). The teaching force consists of 19 professors (nine doctoral advisers and two foreign professors), 18 associate professors and 16 lecturers.

Thirty-five teachers have obtained a doctoral degree and four teachers are doctoral degree candidates. There are 10 part-time professors at the school.

The school has a national expert who has made outstanding contributions, a professor specially-appointed under the Yangtze River Scholar Program, a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a member of the Steering Committee for Teaching of Statistics in Institutions of Higher Learning of the Ministry of Education, a winner in the New Century Excellent Talents Support Plan of the Ministry of Education, two winners of the Henry Fok Award for Young Teachers, and 16 provincial-level experts and scholars.

Research

The school has published eight academic monographs and about 600 papers. It carried out a group of scientific research projects, including one sponsored by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and a key project of the National Natural Science Foundation, 18 National Natural Science Foundation projects, a project sponsored by the National Social Science Fund of China, two sponsored by the Special Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education, and more than 20 provincial-level and other research projects.

In the past five years, the teachers of the college have won some 10 awards, including a first prize, two second-place prizes and a third prize of the Yunnan Natural Science Awards. The school has also won five national-level awards for its research achievements in statistics and a provincial-level award for scientific innovation in nonlinear analysis and optimization.
