Sasakawa grants for research projects of outstanding youth education foundation and Sasakawa fellowships for excellent academic achievements of Yunnan University

1. Grants for research projects

Aim

Founded in 1962, the Nippon Foundation is an international non-profit organization established by Ryoichi Sasakawa, a Japanese philanthropist and entrepreneur. The foundation plays an active role in Japan and is influential across the globe. It started from maritime and shipping business and extended to fields such as education, social welfare and public health. Its programs cover more than 100 countries.

Target students

Doctoral and postgraduate students in humanities and social sciences studying at Yunnan University

Qualifications

(1) The funded research projects should be launched through fair competition and grants will be received depending on its achievements.

(2) The research relating to international politics, international economy and trade, international relations, international law, borderland issues, ethnic issues and the development of Yunnan will be prioritized for the grant.

(3) The key disciplines of humanities and social sciences, doctoral and master’s degree disciplines , as well as research projects related to the development of emerging disciplines,  marginal disciplines and inter-disciplines of Yunnan University should be preferentially chosen to get the grants;

(4) The research cycle is one to two years; graduate students must complete the research project before graduation. The undertaker of research should not apply for new project until the project is completed;

(5) Those undertakers who have completed research will be prioritized when they apply for grants for new research projects.

Money amount

Ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 yuan

Evaluation procedures

(1) The individual applicant should submit a written application report to the department (institute) he/she belongs to.

(2) After the approval of the department (institute), the candidate should fill in an application form. The department (institute) will then give recommendation in triplicate and then submit them to the foundation office.

(3) The departments of personnel,postgraduates, teaching affairs and scientific research will evaluate the applicants’ qualifications.

(4) The academic committee of the foundation will review them and submit the list to the foundation committee for approval. The final result of projects and their undertakers will be reported to the Nippon Foundation and the state education authorities.

2. Fellowships for excellent academic achievements

Aim

Targets

The academic achievements on humanities and social sciences made by doctoral and postgraduates of the two disciplines collectively or individually, including:

(1) Monograph published by an authorized formal publishing house;  

(2) Papers published in public journals;

(3) Papers (or abstracts) submitted to and collected by international academic seminars;

(4) Research projects included in and accepted by international cooperation programs and authorities at national-, provincial- and university-level.

Qualifications

(1)   The research should focus on humanities and social sciences, and the achievements should cover international politics, international economy and trade, international relations, international law, borderland issues, ethnic issues or the development of Yunnan;

(2)   The study and finding should be of academic value and practical significance;

(3)   The finding should be dealt with in a rigorous way, based on fact and approached from a new angle.

(4) The finding should be made in the previous year.

(5) The fellowship will be granted to encourage the study on world peace and development, as well as emerging disciplines and inter-disciplines.

Money amount

First prize: 3,000 yuan

Second prize: 2,000 yuan

Third prize: 1,000 yuan

Besides fellowship, the recipients will also be awarded a certificate of honor. The first and second prize projects will be recommended to compete for awards provided by Sasakawa Outstanding Youth Education Foundation. Yunnan University will reward the entries.

Evaluation procedures

(1) The individual applicant should submit a written application report to the department (institute) he/she belongs to.

(2) After the approval of the department (institute), the candidate should fill in an application form and submit the original or photocopy of the academic finding (The photocopy should be submitted with details such as the publishing house, book number,issue number and name of journal or book; those unpublished papers should be submitted with testimonials of relevant authorities). The department (institute) will give recommendation in triplicate and then submit them to the foundation office.

(3) The departments of personnel, postgraduates, teaching affairs and scientific research will evaluate the applicants’ qualifications.

(4) The foundation office will organize domestic experts to review the applications and the academic committee of the foundation will make the rating of prizes.

(5) The winners will receive certificate of honor and one-off fellowship at an awarding ceremony. The final result of projects and their undertakers will be reported to the Nippon Foundation and the state education authorities.

(6) Any plagiarism and fabrication proved to be true after investigation will face withdrawal of reward, bonus and certificate and even notice of criticism or harsher punishments.
