Chinese information technology giant Tsinghua Unigroup donated 10 million yuan ($1.45 million) to Yunnan University (YNU), as part of an effort to support the university’s building of internet of things (IoT) and big data laboratories, during a ceremony marking a partnership agreement between the two sides, at YNU, on Dec 23.

The ceremony, chaired by Liu Xioajiang, vice-president of YNU, was attended by Yang Lin, Party secretary of YNU; Lin Wenxun, president of YNU; Zhao Weiguo, chairman of Tsinghua Unigroup; Long Tao, co-chairman of the group; Wang Huixuan, co-president of the group; Xu Shubin and Ye Ming, vice-presidents of the group, and other representatives from both sides.

Speaking at the ceremony, Yang Lin said that both sides should make full use of their strengths to build the IoT and big data laboratories, and make coordinated efforts to conduct research into key technologies.

Both sides need to work together to enhance training and increase exports of industrial technology to South Asia and Southeast Asia, added Yang.

In Zhao Weiguo’s speech, he outlined the history of Tsinghua Unigroup and its achievements in recent years. He said that the new partnership deal marked a new level of cooperation between the two sides.

The partnership will promote the development of YNU, particularly in training and research, he said.

Supporting the development of YNU is beneficial to the development of Yunnan province as well as to the implementation of national strategy, added Zhao.

On behalf of both parties, Lin Wenxun and Wang Huixuan signed the deal agreeing the new strategic partnership. Following the signing ceremony, Lin received the donation from Tsinghua Unigroup.

After the ceremony, representatives from Tsinghua Unigroup visited YNU’s Institute for Belt and Road, the library and Zehu Lake. Zhao Weiguo planted a tree in the “forest of entrepreneurship and innovation” as a way to inspire entrepreneurship at YNU.
