A workshop on lake ecology and environmental management was held at Yunnan University (YNU) from June 12 to 17.

The workshop was sponsored and organized by the School of Resources and the Environment, YNU’s School of Geosciences, and Lake Biwa Museum of Japan.

Scholars from Lake Biwa Museum of Japan, Hokkaido University, Hirosaki University, the University of Shiga Prefecture, YNU’s Institute for High-Plateau Lake Ecology and Pollution Treatment, and the Chinese Ministry of Sciences, as well as some representatives from Chinese companies, attended the workshop.

Professor Zhang Hucai, a Chinese sponsor of the event, delivered a speech on the current environmental conditions of Yunnan’s nine major lakes and discussed some existing challenges in preserving them.

The Japanese scholars shared their lake treatment methods, using Lake Biwa as an example.

Scholars from the Chinese Academy of Sciences discussed their latest research achievements.

Experts from Shuangliang Group, a company based in Jiangyin, a county-level city in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, briefed attendees on how they used photocatalysis technology to purify water, as well as on their company’s partnership with YNU.

Professor Zhang granted letters confirming part-time professor appointments at YNU to

Keiichi Takahashi, director-general of Lake Biwa Museum, and Ichiro Imai, honorary professor of Hokkaido University.

Following the appointment ceremony, professors Zhang and Imai chaired a discussion on forging partnerships among all sides.

During the workshop, attendees also visited the Chengjiang Fossils Museum, Fuxian Lake, Xingyun Lake, and Dianchi Lake.
