US former Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, along with his wife Sherburne Abbott, visited Yunnan University (YNU) on Aug 20.
Huang Jing, dean of the Institute of National and Regional Studies of Beijing Language and Culture University, also paid a visit to the university that same day.
The delegation held a seminar with YNU lecturers and students studying international relations.
Professor Steinberg shared his insights into the challenges and opportunities facing China-US relations. He said he believes cooperation between the two countries is still feasible in the context of globalization.
Other issues related to China-US relations were also discussed during the seminar.
James Steinberg is a professor of social science, international affairs, and law at Syracuse University, where he was dean of the Maxwell School from July 2011 to June 2016.
He served as deputy national security advisor to former President Clinton and deputy secretary of state to former President Barack Obama.
Huang Jing is a distinguished professor and dean of the Institute of National and Regional Studies at Beijing Language and Culture University. Prior to that, he was director of the Center on Asia and Globalization (CAG) of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore. He is an internationally recognized expert on Chinese politics, Chinese foreign relations, and security issues in the Asia-Pacific.
Sherburne Abbott is a professor of sustainability science and policy at Syracuse University and former senior science advisor to President Barack Obama.
