At the invitation of the School of Software of Yunnan University, professor Yu Zhengtao from Kunming University of Science and Technology – or KUST -- presented a report to Yunnan University on Dec 17, exploring a fascinating area of cutting-edge technology.
In his report, professor Yu introduced the basic concepts of machine translation, the significance of machine translation under the Belt and Road Initiative, the market potential of machine translation in Northeast Asia and the technical methods used in machine translation.
Yu pointed out that machine translation is an important research direction of artificial intelligence, which has very important academic and industrial research value due to the surging need to translate reports into different languages.
With the rapid development of AI deep learning, machine translation has also made important progress, and neural machine translation has achieved good applications, he said.
Yu also discussed the existing problems of minority language translators and the research work and progress in Southeast Asian language machine translations.
The report was attended by Yao Shaowen, dean of the School of Software of Yunnan University, professors Liu Qing, Wang Wei, Yang Yun and Zhou Wei, as well as undergraduates and postgraduates.
After the report, professor Yu demonstrated his research achievement -- the Yunling translator by translating Chinese into English and Vietnamese.
