Brief introduction to Michigan Technological University

Established in 1885, Michigan Technological University, or MTU, is a research-oriented national public university. In 2017 U.S. News & World Report ranked it 118th among universities in the United States and 56th among the best public universities in the US. Princeton Review has ranked MTU as the best university in the Midwest of the US for three consecutive years. The school has been highly rated for its quality of life, safety and campus environment. Washington Weekly ranks MTU as 29th among the most cost-effective universities in the US.

MTU currently has more than 7,000 students, including more than 1,000 international students from more than 50 countries and regions. The school has a strong faculty and more than 90 percent of full-time teachers have doctoral degrees. It has five colleges providing more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university now offers programs such as accounting, finance, management, marketing, mathematics, statistics, communications culture and media, technology communications, audio production technology, sound design, computer network and system management, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and environmental engineering.

MTU has a strong scientific research capacity, with annual research funding of $69 million. The school has 20 research centers including an advanced dynamics research center, an ecosystem science center, an earth planet and space research institute, a computing science and engineering research institute, a life sciences and technology research institute and a multimedia center.

The program for technology communications provides comprehensive interdisciplinary courses. After graduation, students mostly work for well-known companies or institutions such as Apple, Discovery Channel and Ford. The science and technology communications major has been rated by the U.S. News as one of the top 20 hot majors in the US and U.S. News & World Report ranks it among the top 100 best degree programs.
