The School of Information Science and Engineering of Yunnan University was established in April 1998 by integrating the original computer science department, information and electronic science department and the computing center. The Yunnan provincial computing center joined the school in December 2015, making it the largest scale school at YNU.
It currently has 1,200 full-time undergraduates, more than 300 full-time academic master’s degree students, more than 150 full-time engineering master’s degree students and 50 doctoral students. The school has more than 140 faculty members, including 27 professors (including researchers), 58 associate professors (including senior engineers, senior experimenters, associate researchers), more than 50 teachers with doctoral degrees and 16 doctoral supervisors.
It is composed of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Communication Engineering, the Department of Information and Electronic Science, the Department of Electronic Engineering, the Department of Internet of Things Engineering, the Experimental Center, High Performance Computing Center and Yunnan provincial computing center.
The school has five undergraduate majors -- in computer science and technology (national specialty), communications engineering, electronic information science and technology, electronics information engineering and internet of things engineering.
It has two doctoral programs in information and communication engineering and computer science and technology and also provides 12 academic postgraduate programs.
The latter programs cover computer software and theory, computer application technology, computer system structure, service science and engineering, communications and information systems.
They also cover signals and information processing, pattern recognition and intelligent systems, biomedical engineering, detection technology and automation devices, systems engineering, control theory and control engineering and internet of things engineering, as well as three professional postgraduate programs -- computer technology, electronics and communications engineering, and control engineering.
It also boasts a post-doctoral station in information and communications engineering.
It boasts three provincial-level key laboratories in network communications and intelligent computing, digital media technology and spectral sensing and frontier radio security -- as well as one Yunnan Provincial Department of Science and Technology academician workstation, one Yunnan Development and Reform Commission engineering laboratory, one provincial-level innovation team, two Kunming key laboratories as well as one school-level innovation team.
Over the years, the school has developed advantageous disciplines in big data and knowledge engineering, multimedia information processing and visual computing, distributed computing and cloud computing, pattern recognition and intelligent information processing, biomedical engineering and plateau disease diagnosis, wireless access network elaboration and devices and frontier radio spectrum detection.
During the past five years, the school has presided over and completed more than 200 national/provincial or enterprise entrusted projects and the scale of its scientific research has reached more than 68 million yuan ($9.59 million). The school also won more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including one national technology invention award, as well as two first prizes and four second prizes in natural sciences in Yunnan province.
Members of the school also published more than 600 academic papers and more than 30 monographs and received more than 50 national invention patents. Many results have been widely used, making important contributions to local economic development and the teaching and training of leading professionals in Yunnan province.
