The regional finals of a national innovation contest for university and college students were recently held in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province and Yunnan University took home a raft of prizes, according to YNU officials.

A total of 3,457 students from 69 universities and colleges participated in the finals and 10 teams won prizes.

Five teams from YNU were among the 10 winners, scoring one first prize, one second prize and three third prizes. YNU officials said they will now go on to participate in the national finals on behalf of Yunnan province.

The contest -- jointly hosted by Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the Yunnan provincial committee of the Communist Youth League and the Yunnan Students Federation -- included training, examinations and preliminary contests before the finals were held.

YNU officials said that the university has always encouraged its students and teachers to participate in more entrepreneurship and innovation courses, programs, and contests.

They said it will continue to guide young students to strengthen their sense of entrepreneurship, enhance their entrepreneurial abilities and engage in entrepreneurial practices.
