A periodic summary and expert evaluation assessment conference on the "double first-class" construction of Yunnan University (YNU), which refers to the school's efforts to build itself into a world-class university with world-class disciplines, was held on YNU's Chenggong Campus on Sept 19.
The expert group unanimously agreed that YNU has fully completed various tasks, with a high degree of compliance in construction, a good degree of achievement of goals, and qualitative improvement. It also recommended that the national and local governments increase their continuous support to YNU, helping the university enter the ranks of world-class universities as soon as possible.
Fang Jingyun, president of YNU, gave a report on YNU's "double first-class" construction from 2016 to 2020. He noted that YNU has achieved remarkable results in various aspects, and has built a discipline system with its unique advantages. High-level talents have doubled, scientific research has made great progress, international cooperation and exchanges have been strengthened, reforms have been deepened, while the modern university system has been continuously improved, he added.
The expert group listened to Fang's report and discussed, questioned, as well as reviewed the main content. Experts praised the strong support of the Yunnan Provincial Government in issuing policies and arranging special funds to promote the university's development.
YNU has formed advantages in ethnology, ecology, biology, characteristic resource development and environmental protection, border issues, as well as research on international issues in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Moreover, it has promoted the modernization of governance systems and capabilities, as well as built a self-assessment and evaluation mechanism in line with the characteristics of the school.
Officials of Yunnan province, such as Zhou Rong, director of the Yunnan Education Department, and Yang Kun, deputy director of the Yunnan Finance Department, also spoke at the conference, showing their confidence and support for the further construction of YNU.
YNU leaders gave thanks for the opinions, suggestions and long-term support of the experts, as well as the guidance of government departments. The university will integrate these opinions and suggestions into the future management of its "double first-class" construction.
