Yunnan University (YNU) held the Liberal Arts Research Work Conference, as well as an awarding ceremony for the establishment of the Department of Ethnic and Frontier Studies on Oct 22.

The department is set to further innovate the scientific research system, optimize the allocation of academic resources, promote multi-disciplinary cross-studies and integration, as well as enhance collaborative innovation as part of its goal of becoming one of the most popular in the world for ethnology and border governance research.

The Department of Ethnic and Frontier Studies is the first department established by YNU. It is a powerful measure for the university to explore and build a scientific research innovation system that is more in line with the development of its philosophy and social sciences disciplines, as well as enhance the innovation capabilities of scientific research organizations and release academic vitality.

Lin Wenxun, Party secretary of YNU, noted that the department should make full use of Yunnan's rich ethnic cultural resources, transform resource advantages into academic advantages, break through barriers of different disciplines and colleges, as well as conduct comprehensive research on ethnic and border issues.

The department will focus on the development and positioning of YNU, perform its functions, as well as play a role in constructing the discipline system, academic system, and discourse system of YNU's ethnology, international relations, political science, history, and border governance programs.
