YNU president pens column on China's environmental performance

Updated: 2020-11-12

At the invitation of Aspenia, a well-known Italian think tank publication, Fang Jingyun, president of Yunnan University (YNU), wrote a column entitled "Greener in China," explaining the successful achievements and related measures of China's ecological civilization construction and green development.

Based on environmental monitoring data, remote sensing data, and meteorological data, the article details the significant changes that have occurred in China in recent years in three aspects, namely vegetation conditions, water environment, and atmospheric environment.

The article noted that the significant improvement of China's ecological environment was propelled through a series of powerful measures by the central government. Since the 1970s, the Chinese government has gradually promoted relevant policy formulation and system construction in the field of ecological environment, successfully leading major ecological projects like natural forest resource protection, as well as returning farmland to forests and grasslands.

In recent years, the Chinese government has further increased its environmental protection efforts. It has formulated a clear national action plan, implemented new systems, such as the river chief system and the central environmental inspection system, as well as improved the construction of relevant laws and regulations to promote China's green development and transformation from multiple levels.

The article also mentioned that although China has achieved significant results in ecological and environmental protection, there have been some blind behaviors that violate the laws of nature in some areas that need to be corrected as soon as possible.

The article has provided a window to enhance the international community's understanding of China's ecological civilization construction and green development, as well as demonstrate China's great efforts and positive results in environmental protection. It has also introduced the "Chinese solution" to the international community, which has aroused the attention of Western political circles and academic circles.

Aspenia is Aspen Institute Italia's prestigious journal on international affairs and is published four times a year. Aspen Institute Italia is an independent non-profit academic institution mainly for decision makers in political, business, and cultural circles.
