A ceremony to mark the opening of the Yunnan University Museum of History was held on Dec 30, 2020, at the Donglu campus of Yunnan University (YNU) in Kunming, the capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province.

Representatives from the provincial government, related departments, Yunnan Normal University and YNU participated in the event.

Wu Guangfan, former deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial People's Congress, said at the ceremony that YNU boasts a long history and has trained a large number of Chinese professionals. Wu added that the history museum would showcase the glorious achievement of the university over nearly one century.

Li Jianyu, deputy Party secretary of YNU, recounted the museum's construction process at the ceremony. He said that the university decided to build the museum in 2016 and center it on Huize Hall.

Li added that the new museum is open to the public.

At the ceremony, Professor Zhang Wenxun of YNU donated more than 300 precious letters to the university, which will be displayed at the museum. Teachers and friends originally sent the letters, and he collected them over the past several decades.

Huize Hall is the earliest building established at YNU, and it was listed among the eighth batch of national key cultural relic protection units in 2019. According to university officials, the historic building was protected to the maximum extent during the construction of the history museum.

The museum currently has three exhibition areas: one for university history, one themed area for disciplines and one area for special exhibitions.
