Cui Maoqiao, an official from Yunnan University, was honored as one of China's role models for poverty alleviation on Feb 25 during a grand gathering to mark the nation's poverty alleviation accomplishments. The event was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
A total of 1,981 individuals were honored as role models for poverty alleviation during the meeting.
During an interview, Cui said that the honor is not just an individual one but an acknowledgment of the achievements of all of YNU's teachers and students.
YNU has made great efforts to help reduce poverty. For example, 1,425 impoverished households in Lushi town in Yunnan province have shaken off poverty thanks to the university's help. The town of Lushi was YNU's poverty-alleviation target.
