YNU professor honored by European academy

Professor Yu Hui at Yunnan University (YNU) was recently elected as an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Klaus Mainzer, president of the academy, signed the congratulatory letter sent to Yu.

The European Academy of Sciences and Arts, located in the city of Salzburg in Austria, is an international academic organization of the highest repute in the arts and sciences – covering the humanities, medicine, art, natural science, social sciences, law and economics, technology and environmental science. It is funded by the European Commission and the Austrian Government.

To date, the academy has appointed more than 2,000 academicians, including 34 Nobel Prize winners.

Yu holds a doctorate in philosophy in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in the United States and is currently the distinguished professor of the Changjiang Scholar Program run by the Ministry of Education at YNU. He has long been engaged in ethnomusicology, traditional Chinese music, music temperament and music history.

In addition, Yu is a guest writer of the Grove Musical Instrument Dictionary – the world's authoritative musical encyclopedia.

He has reputedly made outstanding contributions to promoting cultural exchanges between Chinese and international music, as well as in the exploration, research and collation of Asian traditional music.
