Yunnan University helps boost winter sports in province

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

To build up excitement and appreciation of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games -- which opened on Feb 4 in China's national capital and runs to Feb 20 -- China's southwestern Yunnan province is holding a series of themed fitness activities and online sports classes for younger kids and teenagers.

A teacher from Yunnan University -- located in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province -- is contributing to the online classes.

The activity is being sponsored by Yunnan Province Sports Bureau and it invited Ma Tong, ski jumping champion of China's 12th National Winter Games. She explains the meaning and purpose of the sports, the qualities needed for winter sports and gives tips on how to take them up.

Lu Ding, a teacher at the School of Physical Education at Yunnan University, is currently studying for a doctorate at the School of Management at Beijing Sport University. She gives talks on the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the development history of the Games and the development of winter sports in China.

The online classes also combine a series of home fitness videos recorded by professional fitness instructors with children, for parents and teenagers to practice at home.

The videos are recorded in a professional film studio, in an outdoor snow and ice field and at a skiing camp. To boost the appreciation and interest of viewers, the videos adopt a practical approach and they are supplemented by on-site Q&A sessions and on-site practice.

The videos are available through the WeChat account of the Yunnan Province Sports Bureau on Feb 16, 20 and 25.
