Yunnan University promotes innovation in local ceramics

To explore cultural value of Yunnan's ceramics, the Purple Pottery Inheritance Base in Yunnan University, or YNU – located in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province – recently held its second exhibition of outstanding works by young local ceramicists at the Qujing Museum.

The exhibition received a total of 326 new pieces fashioned by young potters. After judging by experts, 110 works were selected – of which seven won gold awards, 16 silver awards and 34 bronze awards. The exhibition works are said to have widely diverse forms, reflecting the latest achievements in the creation and innovation of young ceramic artists in Yunnan province.

In recent years, YNU has closely combined the inheritance and teaching of Chinese excellent traditional culture with serving the high-quality development of Yunnan – and has made significant achievements in the field of the province's ceramic intangible cultural heritage research and education.

YNU was approved by the Ministry of Education to be included in its first batch of excellent traditional Chinese culture inheritance bases in 2018. Since then, it has hosted four Chinese intangible cultural heritage research and training program seminars, as well as organized more than 10 activities for "intangible cultural heritage entering YNU" and "intangible cultural heritage helping rural revitalization".

Overall, YNU is said to provide first-class learning resources for the province's ceramics inheritors, and practitioners and is building a new exchange and display platform for them.
