Guan Qiaozhong, a graduate alumnus of the Chinese Department of Yunnan University or YNU, on July 12 donated 10 million yuan ($1.48 million) to the university – located in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province – to help support the development of his alma mater.
Guan is chairman of Hong Kong Science and Technology Co and executive director of the Board of Directors of Yunnan University.
He founded Guangdong Kaipu Biotechnology Co in 2003 and led the company to develop into one of the leading companies in nucleic acid molecular diagnosis in China. During the 90th anniversary celebrations of the university in 2013, Guan donated 5 million yuan to establish the Donglu Academy at YNU.
At the recent donation ceremony, Lin Wenxun, secretary of the Party committee of Yunnan University, said that the achievements of the university's construction and development in recent years were inseparable from the care and support of people from all walks of life, especially YNU's alumni.
Donor Guan Qiaozhong said that his donation was just an ordinary student's dedication to the centennial celebrations of his alma mater next year. He added that he hoped that Yunnan University would achieve many more new developments.
