Yunnan University is a comprehensive university with majors in many disciplines, including liberal arts, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine.
In the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the university had 30 disciplines among the top 70 percent of the country, including two A-type disciplines (A+ for ethnology and A- for ecology) and 14 B-type disciplines.
The disciplines of chemistry, botany, and zoology are among the top one percent in the world ESI (Essential Science Indicators) ranking.
It has become a comprehensive university focusing on researches on ethnology, ecology, biology, characteristic resource development, environmental protection, border issues, and South and Southeast Asia international issues, and boasting relatively complete disciplines and intensive talents.

The university vigorously implements the strategy of "strengthening the university construction with talents", and the number of high-level talents are growing rapidly.
Currently, YNU has introduced six academicians both double appointed and special appointed. Eleven personnel are selected for various projects of the national high-level talent introduction program.
Also, the university has 14 talents who are special-appointed professors and lecture professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Award Program" of the Ministry of Education, as well as 14 winners in national science fund for distinguished young scholars and two winners in the national outstanding youth science fund.

Yunnan University is active in scientific research and platform construction and has reportedly achieved great results in these activities.
In recent years, the university has independently presided over projects for the 973 Plan, the 863 Plan, and 21 major bidding projects for the National Social Science Fund of China, as well as four humanities and social science milestone projects for the Ministry of Education.
YNU has actively built academic exchange platforms and organizes various forms of academic exchange activities such as the series Donglu High-end Academic Forum, as well as special academic lectures from various schools.
