Perennial rice plays an active role in improving society and the economy, promoting the sustainability of agricultural production systems, and maintaining ecological security, and has strong application potential.

The innovative research of perennial rice will help maintain food security and ecological integrity, and has important implications for other perennial food crop research.

So far, Hu's team has successfully bred a number of perennial rice varieties, which have been successfully tested and promoted in China and surrounding countries.

Perennial Rice 23 (PR23) was approved as a variety in 2018. It is highly-adaptable, has a stable yield, and is highly-perennial. It is a milestone in the field of perennial food crops based on interspecific hybridization.
