Updated: Feb 14, 2023

In the 2022 national Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling or CUMCM, undergraduate students from Yunnan University stole the limelight – winning one first prize and seven second prizes in the country.

In total, students at Yunnan University, or YNU – located in Kunming, Southwest China's Yunnan province – won 77 first, second and third prizes in the provincial competitions and the number of national and provincial awards of the university ranked first in the province.

CUMCM is a national undergraduate science and technology competition sponsored by the China Association of Industry and Applied Mathematics. It is one of the largest basic discipline competitions in the country and is the biggest mathematical modeling competition in the world.

In 2022, 54,257 teams from 1,606 colleges and universities across the country and from the United Kingdom, Malaysia and other nations participated in the contest, with nearly 160,000 students enrolled.

Since the start of the competition in September 2022, 189 teams composed of 559 students from YNU have participated in the event after a rigorous selection process conducted by the university.

The Institute of Information Technology undertook the internal organization of the competition and organized 14 online training sessions for all participating students. It invited more than 10 teachers with rich experience in teaching and competitions to conduct all-round training.

Courses with such names as Mathematical Modeling and Experiment, Practical Training of Mathematical Modeling and Innovation, and General Experiment of Operational Research were offered to students at the time.
