Yunnan University professor, alumni elected academicians

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the list of elected academicians for the 2023 academy selection on Nov 22. A total of 59 academicians were elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 74 academicians were elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Xu Xing, professor of the Center for Vertebrate Evolutionary Biology of Yunnan University and director of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was elected as an academician of the Division of Earth Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

His primary research focuses on Mesozoic continental vertebrate fossils and stratigraphy, including the construction of a vertebrate fossil database.

To date, Xu has authored over 300 papers, with more than 50 published in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, and PNAS. Many of his contributions are cited in numerous authoritative textbooks worldwide.

In addition, three alumni from Yunnan University were elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Cao Zhen, a researcher at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (with an undergraduate degree from Yunnan University's Physics Department), was elected as an academician of the Division of Mathematical Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Sun Hang, a researcher at the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (with an undergraduate degree from Yunnan University's Biology Department), was elected as an academician of the Division of Life Sciences and Medicine at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Du Guanben from Southwest Forestry University (with a master’s degree in organic chemistry from Yunnan University) was elected as an academician of the Agricultural Engineering Division at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
