German biologist gives lecture at YNU

Axel Meyer, a member of the German Academy of Sciences and a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Konstanz, Germany, was invited to speak at the Yunnan University Donglu High-end Academic Forum on April 9.

Representatives from the National Key Laboratory of Yunnan Bioresource Conservation and Utilization, the School of Life Sciences, and Yunnan University's Institute of Ecological Research and Pollution Control of the Plateau Lake participated in the forum.

Meyer's primary research areas include the evolutionary diversification of African cichlid fish and fish-specific genome duplication. He has published over 400 papers in fields such as zoology, systematics, evolutionary developmental biology, phylogenetic analysis, and comparative genomics. With over 66,000 citations, he is one of the most highly cited evolutionary biologists in the world.

During the lecture, Meyer presented his research on fish and highlighted the latest developments.

Furthermore, Meyer focused on topics such as the origin of lungfish and genome evolution, providing a fresh and insightful perspective on species evolution and diversification, thereby enhancing understanding of fish genome evolution and the formation of related phenotypic traits.

Faculty and students of Yunnan University engaged in in-depth academic discussions with Meyer, exploring topics such as the evolution timeline and genome size of African cichlid fish.

Meyer is also invited to visit the National Key Laboratory of Yunnan Bioresource Conservation and Utilization, where he is engaged in extensive discussions with the lab's faculty and students regarding research on naturally and artificially polyploidized complex genome fish species.
