Updated: Jul 12, 2024

At the recent 13th Yunnan Province University Student Psycho Drama finals, the psychological short play Unbound, performed by the – Yunsheng Drama Club from Yunnan University, or YNU – located in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province – won second prize after a tough competition.

Yunnan University has participated in and won awards in the provincial university student psycho drama competition for four consecutive times now.

According to the contest requirements, each psycho drama must not exceed eight minutes in length. Like their rivals, creating a vivid story within such a limited timeframe posed a significant challenge to the students and faculty of the Yunsheng Drama Club.

Du Bihan, a sophomore from the School of Journalism and Communication at Yunnan University and the playwright of Unbound, told the media covering the event that the script underwent seven revisions and took nearly half a year to finalize.

In addition to meticulously refining the storyline, the drama society utilized stage lighting, background music and other techniques to reflect the protagonist's emotional fluctuations, enhancing the audience's engagement with the plot.

At the beginning of Unbound, protagonist Wu Feng starts to doubt herself and just at this moment, the stage is bathed in a blue atmosphere light, portraying her inner confusion.

As Wu successfully frees herself from internal constraints towards the end, warm-colored lights illuminate the stage, symbolizing the release of her emotions.
