Updated: Jul 24, 2024

Yunnan University, or YNU – located in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan province – launched the 14th Yunnan University Graduate Field Research Summer School at its Donglu Campus on July 15.

Its organizers say the event aims to better enable graduate students and young teachers in anthropology, ethnology, sociology and social work to expand their understanding of the modernization of China.

Professor Zhang Li from the University of California, Davis, is one of the lecturers during the summer school. Lin Jiawen, a doctoral student from the Australian National University in Canberra, is one of the scholars participating in the field research event. Both of them delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

This summer school's study program is divided into three stages: Classroom training, fieldwork and the writing of investigation reports.

It will include lectures and studies on modernization theory and Chinese-style modernization theory. Moreover, it will also analyze the basic theories and methods of fieldwork – as well as experiences, cases and theoretical constructs of field research in frontier areas.

Additionally, the program will organize students to visit various field research sites in Yunnan, where they will conduct field research and complete research reports.
