This fall semester, Yunnan University launched 11 new elective physical education (PE) courses. These include flag football, a new addition to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics; ultimate Frisbee, which is loved by young people; fitness and body sculpting classes; and outdoor survival training.
Upon release, the new courses created a campus-wide sensation. Combined with traditional offerings like soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping-pong, and tennis, undergraduates now have access to 22 PE electives. Popular classes were fully booked within minutes.
The secret behind the popularity of Yunnan University's PE courses lies in their alignment with students' real needs and interests. For instance, running has become a fashionable activity on campus, making the marathon course a hot favorite. Similarly, the fitness and body sculpting class integrates rope skipping with ethnic minority music, which students find fun and effective for weight loss.
This summer, the university's young PE instructors surveyed students' favorite sports before introducing these new courses.
Yunnan University plans to expand its PE electives to 40 courses and design a standard half-marathon track to host university-wide events.
