The Yunnan University-University of Malaya Joint College is a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution jointly established by Yunnan University and the University of Malaya (UM) with approval from the Ministry of Education. Scheduled to begin enrolling students in 2025, it is committed to cultivating globally minded, innovative talent to support the Belt and Road Initiative and regional economic development.
I. Introduction to the Joint College
Yunnan University is one of the first key universities selected for Project 211, one of the first 42 First-class Universities, and part of a new round of the Double First-Class Construction initiative. UM is Malaysia's top public research university, ranking 60th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and 9th in Asia. The Joint College combines the disciplinary strengths and international educational resources of both universities to provide students with high-quality international education in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence, new materials, and new energy.
The Joint College is located in the Chenggong Campus of Yunnan University, South Section, East Outer Ring Road, University Town, Chenggong District, Kunming, Yunnan Province. The Campus boasts a picturesque environment and complete infrastructure. The Joint College establishes three Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate majors: artificial intelligence, chemical engineering and technology, and materials science and engineering. These three majors represent advantageous disciplines and characteristic majors of both universities. Moreover, they are categorized as emerging engineering majors that China is currently prioritizing and will continue to focus on advancing in the future.
The three majors of UM are ranked among the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings. Graduates who obtain a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from UM will receive authoritative certification from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). This signifies that their professional skills meet the international engineer qualification standard. Yunnan University's materials science and engineering is recognized as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and its chemical engineering and technology is approved as a provincial first-class undergraduate major construction site.
II. Majors
(I) Artificial intelligence
1. Training objectives
To nurture innovative talent proficient in fundamental theories, technologies, and artificial intelligence methods and capable of deeply understanding large, complex problems in intelligent systems through engineering practice and designing targeted solutions.
2. Employment orientation
Graduates can pursue careers in the research, design, development, and management of various intelligent systems and big data systems in national government agencies, political and legal departments, the military, banks, financial and securities institutions, and information technology companies specializing in communications and the Internet. Additionally, they have the option to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in related fields both domestically or internationally.
3. Length of schooling and academic degree
Students are required to complete four years of study and will be awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Yunnan University and a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) from UM.
(II) Chemical engineering and technology
1. Training objectives
To nurture innovative engineering and technical talent who can systematically master the basic knowledge and practical skills in natural sciences, chemical engineering, and process design and are capable of engaging in green chemical industries and industrial development practices in related fields.
2. Employment orientation
Graduates have opportunities to work at enterprises and institutions across the chemical, metallurgy, coal, electricity, building materials, urban construction, and environmental protection industries. Their roles may include process and procedure development, engineering design, new product development and technological transformation, and production management. Furthermore, they can choose to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in related fields either domestically or internationally.
3. Length of schooling and academic degree
Students are required to complete four years of study and will be awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Yunnan University and a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from UM.
(III) Materials science and engineering
1. Training objectives
To nurture exceptional professionals who systematically master fundamental knowledge and professional skills in materials science and engineering and are capable of conducting advanced research and practical applications in the fields of polymer materials, metal and semiconductor materials, and inorganic functional materials.
2. Employment orientation
Graduates can engage in the production, R&D, consulting, and management of traditional and advanced materials in industries such as materials, electronics, information, energy, chemicals, environment, mining and metallurgy, and construction. Furthermore, they can choose to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in related fields either domestically or internationally.
3. Length of schooling and academic degree
Students are required to complete four years of study and will be awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Yunnan University and a Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science from UM.
III. Target Students
Candidates who meet the registration requirements of the 2025 Admission Regulations for Regular Institutions of Higher Education and pass the Nationwide Unified Examination for Admissions to General Universities and Colleges that year
IV. Enrollment Plan
The enrollment capacity for each major is set at 100 students.
V. Admission Rules and Enrollment Requirements
1. The Joint College follows the admission rules stipulated in the 2025 Undergraduate Admission Constitution for Yunnan University in the enrolling provinces.
2. Each professional course has specific English proficiency requirements for students. To graduate with a bachelor's degree from UM, students must earn the following English language scores: IELTS: 5.5 points; TOEFL IBT (Internet-based Test): 46 points; TOEFL Essentials (online test): 8 points; PTE Academic English test: 51 points; Cambridge English Qualifications: 160 points. Non-English language candidates should carefully consider their specific circumstances before applying.
3. We only accept candidates who fill in the application form for the Sino-foreign cooperative education project of the Joint College. After being admitted to a major within the Joint College, students are not permitted to switch to other majors outside the Joint College.
4. After new students are enrolled, their admission qualifications will be reviewed in accordance with relevant regulations. Those who fail to meet the admission requirements or commit fraud will be disqualified from admission.
VI. Training Model
The "4+0" model means completing all four years of study at Yunnan University. The primary professional and core courses are taught in English, with some courses offered bilingually.
VII. Academic Degree
Students who complete their studies within the designated timeframe and meet the graduation requirements will be awarded an undergraduate diploma from Yunnan University. Additionally, those who meet the degree-granting criteria of both parties will be awarded a bachelor's degree from both Yunnan University and UM. The academic degree is officially recognized by the Ministries of Education of both China and Malaysia.
VIII. Charging Standard
(I) Tuition standard
We strictly follow the standard of RMB 65,000/student/academic year that is finally submitted to the Yunnan Development and Reform Commission and the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education for filing.
(II) Accommodation fee standard
Class I apartment (4-person room): RMB 1,200/student/academic year; Class I apartment (6-person room): RMB 800/student/academic year.
