Yunnan University launches Southwest China's first 'Qian Xuesen Class'

Updated: Aug 11, 2025

Yunnan University has received approval to establish the first "Qian Xuesen Class" in Southwest China, dedicated to cultivating top-notch interdisciplinary talents with solid scientific literacy, outstanding engineering capability, and strong innovative spirit. The program will enroll its first students this year.

Established in 2005, the "Qian Xuesen Class" celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025. Similar programs have been set up at seven leading universities in China, including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the National University of Defense Technology, aiming to train elite innovators in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and new energy.

Utilizing its strengths in functional materials, infrared detection, and energy materials, Yunnan University will host the program within the School of Materials and Energy, majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. A customized curriculum follows the integrated bachelor–master's model, combining general and interdisciplinary education, early research training, in-depth scientific practice, and pathways to employment or doctoral study.

The program also adopts a dual-mentorship system pairing on-campus experts – academicians, distinguished professors, national award winners – with industry specialists from enterprises and research institutes. It features small-class teaching (20 students per class), dynamic assessment, and progressive research modules from undergraduate to postgraduate stages.

Recruitment targets first-year science and engineering undergraduates, (except for students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs, art and sports programs, students admitted through targeted enrollment, and those who are not allowed to change their majors as stipulated by the Ministry of Education), through a competitive selection process assessing academic performance, practical skills, research interest, and creativity. The training roadmap spans foundational learning, research skill enhancement, industry engagement, and translational research, with postgraduate training offered through international or industry-linked bases.
