Yunnan University (YNU) in Kunming, capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan province, is employing outstanding young talent from overseas.
The National Natural Science Foundation – the body directly affiliated with China's State Council and which manages the National Natural Science Fund – has established and has been running an outstanding young science fund project (overseas) program since 2021.
The aim is to improve its talent funding system, strengthen the training of talent, and attract outstanding young talent from overseas to work in China.
The following are announcements concerning the recruitment process:
Requirements
1. Applicants should abide by the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China.
2. Applicants should be born after Jan 1, 1986.
3. A doctoral degree is needed for the applicant, with the main research interests being natural science or engineering technology.
4. After obtaining their doctorate, applicants must have held a formal teaching or research position for more than 36 consecutive months at an overseas university, research institution, or corporate research institute. For those who obtained a doctorate overseas and have made outstanding achievements, this work-experience requirement may be appropriately relaxed (this exception does not apply to individuals who earned an overseas doctorate through a joint training program with China). During the period of overseas employment, if the applicant holds a paid position within China, that domestic work experience will not count toward the required overseas work experience.
5. Applicants' achievements in science research or technology must have been recognized by peers.
6. Applicants must not have returned to China for work yet or must have only done so after Jan 1, 2025. They must have left their overseas job and committed to working full-time in China for at least three years after receiving the offer.
Special requirement: The applicant must comply with all relevant regulations on the coordination and integration of national science and technology talent programs. At the same level, an applicant can undertake only one national science and technology talent program and cannot apply for programs at a higher level.
Salary and preferential treatment
Applicants who are approved by Yunnan University under the Young Talent (Overseas) program will be given priority for employment as a teaching and research leader or as a reserve talent at the C position of the university. During the employment period, if the applicant completes the assessment tasks of Yunnan University, they can apply for promotion to a higher-level position and enjoy corresponding benefits. One reserved position will be provided, and the applicant will participate in the latest internal professional title evaluation after joining the university.
Talent employed by Yunnan University will receive an annual salary and allowance, as well as a housing subsidy and research start-up funds.
Talent will enjoy the public benefits of career establishment teachers, including social security, medical insurance, and other benefits. Preferential medical treatment at affiliated hospitals and children's schooling at affiliated schools are included.
It is recommended that talents apply for the "Support Program for Talents of Yunnan Province" first. Those selected for this program will receive a one-time subsidy for work and living expenses ranging from 500,000 yuan ($72,643) to 1,000,000 yuan, and project support funds of up to 10 million yuan.
