Yunnan University (YNU) in Kunming, capital city of Southwest China's Yunnan province, has been sending 34 master's students majoring in Regional and Country-Specific Studies abroad for field surveys since April 2023.

In 2021, the Yunnan University's Institute of Regional and Country Studies established the "Master's Special Program in Regional and Country Studies in South and Southeast Asia" and began enrollment the same year.

The institute specifically recruited master's students with proficiency in non-general languages of South and Southeast Asia.

These master's students were dispatched to seven South and Southeast Asian countries to conduct field surveys that lasted three to six months. These countries include Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The students aim to gain firsthand knowledge of the political, economic, cultural, ethnic, religious, and social realities of the target countries.

After nearly a year, most of the deployed master's students returned to Yunnan University after completing their research tasks. They then submitted research reports, various observations, texts, images, and videos.

Through these field surveys, students have further enhanced their practical abilities in conducting meticulous studies in regional countries, which has also driven the institute to enhance its in-depth studies of regional countries.
